Statement by the Minister for the Interior, Hon. J.D. Anthony, M.P.

Sixteen countries have accepted invitations to participate in

an international symposium on hydrological forecasting at Surfers

Paradise in November.

Representatives from government departments, public utilities, universities and other organisations within Australia will also attend.

Sponsored jointly by the World Meteorological Organisation and

UNESCO, the symposium's general theme will be the forecasting of river

floods, with special reference to the South-East Asian region.

Overseas and local experts will deliver papers and lectures.

During the symposium, participants will be taken on a field trip

to inspect flood mitigation works and flood forecasting. instrumentation

in the Tweed and Richmond River systems in N.S.W.

A post-sessional tour will cover similar works in the Macleay

and Clarence River valleys.

Overseas participants will come from Argentina, Canada, Eire, France, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, the Soviet Union, Thailand, the United States, Venezuela

and West Germany.
