Private banks will be offered the opportunity of providing

banking facilities in A.C.T. departmental schools, the Minister

for the Interior, Mrs Anthony, said today.

In the past this service has been provided only by the

Commonwealth Savings Bank.

Mr. Anthony said that a committee of management had been

established to draw up rules for the new service.

This comprised a representative of the Department of the

Interior, as chairman,, the two Inspectors of Schools, a representative

of the Commonwealth Banking Corporation and two representatives of

the Australian Bankers' Association, one representating Sydney

based banks and one the Melbourne based banks.

Mr. Anthony said the service would be run on broadly similar

lines to one which operated in Western Australia.

The participating banks would provide a banking officer at

each school on a roster system to handle the business for all banks.

There would be complete freedom. for parents and children in

choice of a bank.
