Have your say on new rules for big polluters

Western Australians are being asked to have their say on climate change with new pollution guidelines available for public comment by September 2.

Clean State WA spokesperson Piers Verstegen said the public only has a few days left to make a submission on the Environment Protection Authority’s proposed new greenhouse gas assessment guidelines.

“Action on climate change is needed urgently in WA,” Mr Verstegen said.

“WA is the only state with rising carbon pollution, and the only state with no climate change policy or emissions targets.

“Uncontrolled carbon pollution from the LNG industry is the fastest-growing pollution source in Australia.

“This pollution growth is breaching the Paris agreement and putting our future and our climate at risk.

“The good news is that WA’s big polluters in the LNG industry can address the problem through job-creating investments in tree planting, carbon farming and renewable energy.

“Offsetting pollution from LNG production in WA has been estimated to create 4,000 new jobs across WA, with most of these jobs located in regional areas.

“This could be a huge employment and investment opportunity that would help farmers and rural and regional communities, while making a huge contribution to tackling climate change.

“It is time the big polluters were held to account for their emissions and we urge all West Australians to support the EPA in setting strong new pollution rules.”

Public submissions on the proposed EPA guidelines can be made online at
