OUT OF POCKET HEALTH COSTS HIT NEW RECORD HIGHS

The Morrison Government must explain why they are sitting on their hands when it comes

to taking action on Australia’s soaring out of pocket health care costs.

The latest Quarterly Medicare Statistics released yesterday have confirmed what we

already knew, that health care costs burdening Australians under this Government are

continuing to exceed record highs.

These numbers show that the cost for a patient to visit a general practitioner has risen 2.8

per cent in the last twelve months while the cost to see a specialist is now 4.8 per cent

higher than the same time last year.

According to the Government’s own figures, around 1.3 million Australians per year skip or

delay Medicare services due to cost.

This is while waiting lists in hospitals for surgeries are at record highs and patients

struggle to receive the health care they need.

Labor created Medicare and will always fight to defend and improve universal access to

health care.

And Labor will always fight against Liberal Governments who try and determine your

access to health care based on your credit card.

Greg Hunt and the Coalition need to address this health care crisis unfolding on their

watch, because under this Government out of pocket costs and waiting lists have never

been higher.
