Australia-China Special Fund for Scientific and Technological Cooperation

The Australia-China Fund is intended to develop and support collaborative scientific and strategic research and development projects drawing on complementary technology strengths in Australia and China. Projects are expected to build productive alliances to enhance access to wider market opportunities for Australian and Chinese products/services and attract or create opportunities for researchers, and research and business communities in both countries. Projects must involve international networking and

showcasing that encourages commercialisation of research and economic development between Australia and China.

The Fund Is jointly managed by DEST and its Chinese counterpart, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), through a joint Working Group.

Priority areas of the Fund include: advanced materials, agriculture, biote chnology, the environment, and mining and energy. However, applications in other areas will be considered.

The Fund is expected to support 5-10 projects annually. Under the arrangement, $A250,000 will be available from each country on an annual basis. Projects must commence In the financial year following the application round. No minimum project length applies. Projects cannot be funded beyond the life of the Fund (June 2006).

Typically, funded projects will receive financial support from both the Commonwealth and MOST. The application must be prepared jointly between the Australian and Chinese collaborators. The Australian proponent is required to submit an application to DEST for consideration of the Australian component of the joint project and the Chinese proponent Is required to submit an application to MOST for consideration of the Chinese component of the joint project.

There will be an annual selection round held in January to consider

applications for funding in the following financial year.

The 2003 Australia-China Special Fund for Scientific and Technological Cooperation application round closed on 31 January 2003.
