Wrapping up the week in Parliament

Federal Independent Member for Indi Cathy McGowan has welcomed Senator Bridget McKenzie’s plans for a new electorate office in Wodonga.

“Having the Minister responsible for regional services, local government and decentralisation in Indi will be of great benefit as we work through finalising the Albury-Wodonga deal announced in Albury last month by the Prime Minister,” Ms McGowan said.

“One of the things we love in Indi is a good election. Having quality candidates to for a fierce battle around ideas and policy is welcome.

“I opened the Wodonga office in 2014, shortly after being elected. Since then, thousands of people have made contact about issues ranging from cross-border anomalies, rural telecommunications, climate action and moving Kids off Nauru with help from me and from electorate officers.”

Ms McGowan said independent, effective representation remained her top priority ahead of the next federal election.

“My focus is putting Indi first. My job is to represent Indi and to keep Indi independent and orange,” Ms McGowan said.

“I’m working on a succession plan. At some stage I’ll stop being the member for Indi, whether it’s this term or next term,” she said.

“Indi communities have achieved great results in the past five years. 48 new mobile phone towers have been installed under state and federal Mobile Black Spot Programmes and we have a $235 million funding commitment to upgrade the North East Rail Line, with works to begin early next year.

“More than $9 million in funding for programs, infrastructure and local sporting champions grants have come into Wodonga in the last 12 months.”
