Greens: Australia must not block UN water resolution

Media Release | Spokesperson Rachel Siewert

Friday 23rd July 2010, 7:24pm

The Australian Greens have called on the Federal Government to change its stance and to

support a draft UN resolution on the Human Right for Water and Sanitation.

Senator Rachel Siewert, Greens spokesperson for Water, says Australia needs to show

international leadership and defend the basic rights of disadvantaged people across the

world.

“This resolution calls for access to safe drinking water and sanitation to be regarded as a

human right, and for global action to invest in the development of infrastructure needed to

deliver this right. Surely this is something that nobody should disagree with?” Senator

Siewert said today.

“Around 1.5 million children die annually from water born diseases originating from

inadequate sanitation and water supplies. We should be doing all we can to reduce this

frightening number,” said Senator Siewert.

“Australia, the UK and Canada are reportedly opposing this resolution and are seeking to

weaken it. We should be setting a global example and working for unified international

support for this resolution, not undermining it.

“People are dying today from diseases that we can fix if we work together as an international

community. Inaction on Australia’s part is nothing short of deplorable,” Senator Siewert

concluded.
