Bring Monash Bill on for vote

Federal Independent Member for Indi Cathy McGowan is calling for the government to bring the Honour John Monash Bill 2018 on for debate in parliament.

Ms McGowan this morning introduced the private members’ bill, which aims to promote Monash from General to Field Marshal, the highest rank in the Australian Army. Ms McGowan has been working with Indi resident and former Deputy Prime Minister the Honourable Tim Fischer AC to develop the Bill.

“John Monash’s leadership was critical in ensuring Australia’s freedom during World War I. Promoting him from General to Field Marshal is an acknowledgement of his contributions,” Ms McGowan said.

“Monash received no Australian Government awards after 11am, 11 November 1918. It would be fitting therefore, for this Bill to be debated and voted on this week ahead of 11 November this year, the centenary of Armistice.

“There is a lot of support for this Bill in Indi, around Australia and within parliament. Back in April 2015, I attended an event in Flowerdale where Tim Fischer was the guest speaker. We heard from local people who support honouring Monash’s efforts. I calling on the government to bring the Bill on for debate and a vote.”

The Bill proposes to promote Monash to Field Marshal from 1 January 1931, the date he returned to active duty. The Bill has been drafted with safe guards to ensure the promotion will apply to Monash only.
