Cathy welcomes $235m funding commitment for North East rail

Federal Independent Member for Indi Cathy McGowan has welcomed confirmation of $235 million in commonwealth funding for the North East Rail Line.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack was in Albury today to announce the scope of works. Ms McGowan said action on trains and the North East rail line was the result of a strong partnership between community, North East advocacy groups and all levels of government.

“Action for the North East Rail Line has taken considerable time. It is pleasing to see that the government has heard Indi’s call for improved tracks and has committed to essential funding,” Ms McGowan

“As an independent MP, I was able to help constituents, the Border Rail Action Group and Hume Rail Corridor Group bring the issue of trains and the North East rail line to the attention of all levels of Government.

Improving the North East Rail line has been a major priority for Ms McGowan since being elected in 2013. The Victorian Government has promised new new rolling stock for the North East rail line. It now must announce funding.

“Both state and federal governments have listened to Indi’s concerns about trains and the rail track,” Ms McGowan said.

“Funding for track upgrades and a commitment for new rolling stock will go a long way to improving the rail service for Indi. I am calling on all levels of government to continue to listen to Indi and ensure reliable, safe and comfortable public transport is available well into the future.”
