Timeline for resignation of Senator Andrew Bartlett

As previously announced, Queensland Greens Senator Andrew Bartlett will be resigning his Senate seat to focus on his campaign to win the House of Representatives seat of Brisbane from the Liberal Party.

Larissa Waters will be filling the vacancy.

Senator Bartlett’s final Senate sitting day will be Thursday 23rd August.

Formal resignation will be submitted to the President of the Senate on the morning of Monday 27th August.

Official notification of the Senate vacancy is then forwarded, via the Governor of Queensland, to the Speaker of the Queensland Legislative Assembly.

Under the Standing Orders of the Queensland Legislative Assembly, at least seven days notice is required to be given to state MPs of a sitting to elect a person to fill a Senate casual vacancy.

The Queensland Parliament is scheduled to sit from Tuesday 4th to Thursday 6th of September, giving sufficient time for them to appoint Larissa Waters to the Senate vacancy.

Larissa Waters can be sworn in when the Senate next sits, on Monday 10th September.

The Speaker of the Queensland Legislative Assembly, Leader of the House, and Premier of Queensland have all been notified in advance of Senator Bartlett’s intention to resign by Monday 27th, and the Premier’s office has also already been notified by the relevant office bearers of the Queensland Greens of the party’s decision to put forward Larissa Waters to fill the Senate vacancy caused by Senator Bartlett’s resignation.
