CALL FOR GOVERNMENT TO THINK ABOUT TECH THAT THINKS FOR ITSELF

A new voice has lent its support to a push for governments to think a lot more about the development and application of artificial intelligence.

Australian Chief Scientist Dr Alan Finkel today urged governments to think about the regulatory framework surrounding the development of AI.

His voice builds on calls made by Labor back in September for the Turnbull government to champion this issue on the world stage.

While AI has begun to be applied in a wide variety of beneficial ways, very few people are thinking about boundary setting for the tech that thinks for itself.

The World Economic Forum - along with prominent figures such as Elon Musk and Dr. Stephen Hawking - have been saying for some time that the lack of government thought around this issue presents itself as a risk.

The Federal Opposition continues to urge the Turnbull government to use Australia’s traditionally trusted voice to encourage governments begin to collaborate and cooperate on this vital issue.

Dr. Finkel’s interventions today reinforce the urgency around this issue and should be welcomed widely.
