SENATOR THE HON GEORGE BRANDIS QC

ATTORNEY-GENERAL

LEADER OF THE GOVERNMENT IN THE SENATE

MEDIA RELEASE

PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE

On behalf of all Government Senators, I warmly congratulate Senator Scott Ryan on his election as the 25th President of the Senate. At the age of 44, he is also the youngest President of the Senate since Federation.

Senator Ryan is widely respected, across the Senate chamber, for his integrity, his authority and his decency. His knowledge of procedural matters is unmatched; his command of the Senate Standing Orders is legendary.

It is important that the President of the Senate be a person who commands the respect of the Chamber. I have no doubt that Senator Ryan will do so. That is particularly important at a time when most of the debate on important and complex legislation takes place in the Senate.

A Liberal Senator for Victoria since 2008, Senator Ryan has already enjoyed a significant Senate career. Earlier in his career, he served on numerous Senate Committees, and was Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Public Administration. He has been a member of the Executive Government since the election of the Coalition in 2013, most recently as Special Minister of State. He has also served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education and Training, Assistant Cabinet Secretary, Minister for Vocational Education and Skills and Deputy Manager of Government Business in the Senate.

His elevation today to the Presidency of the Senate is the latest achievement in what is already a distinguished Parliamentary career.

I note that the Opposition, consistent with the established convention, supported the Government’s nominee.

I wish Senator Ryan a long and successful career in this illustrious office.
