THE HON BRENDAN O’CONNOR SHADOW MINISTER FOR EMPLOYMENT AND WORKPLACE RELATIONS MEMBER FOR GORTON

YOUTH UNDEREMPLOYMENT IS A DISGRACE

The Turnbull Government has achieved yet another shameful record: youth underemployment is at the highest it has been at any time in the 40 years since the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) started to record it, reaching an appalling 18 per cent.

There are now more than 650,000 young people who cannot find work or cannot find enough work, according to the Brotherhood of St Laurence report Generation stalled: Young, underemployed and living precariously in Australia. This is on top of the rise in youth unemployment in February to 13.5 per cent.

These are not good numbers for the country and they are a damning indictment on Malcolm Turnbull’s lack of leadership and policies, particularly given he campaigned on “jobs and growth”.

What is the Turnbull Government’s response? To support a pay cut of up to $77 a week for up to 700,000 workers - many of whom are young people - by cutting penalty rates.

Under Malcolm Turnbull people will be working more hours for less money. You do not cut wages to create jobs.

Labor believes in a system that provides a strong safety net, creates jobs, drives productivity and delivers a strong economic future.

We want to build Australian, buy Australian, employ Australian.

Malcolm Turnbull doesn’t know what he wants other than to rip money out of the pockets of hard working Australians and line the pockets of big business with a massive tax cut.
