More revelations of abuse of people with disability show why a Royal Commission needed: Greens

A harrowing Four Corners report tonight that is set to reveal more shocking cases of abuse of people with disability in care should trigger a Royal Commission, Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert said today.

“When I initiated and chaired a senate inquiry into abuse, violence and neglect of people with disability in institutional and residential settings, it became clear that more investigation was needed. The evidence given was chilling and heartbreaking and it should have prompted national outrage and action.

“It was distressing to see a snapshot of the widespread and systemic abuse that is happening. Abuse is happening across the country yet there is a deafening silence from our Federal Government.

“Just recently, the Government finally responded to the Senate inquiry into this abuse and refused to hold a Royal Commission.

“In light of tonight’s report I urge the Government to reconsider a Royal Commission. This will keep happening unless the Federal Government steps in with meaningful action.

“For people with disability, institutional and residential care has become a dark and terrifying place when it should somewhere they feel safe. They should be receiving care, not abuse”.
