APPOINTMENTS TO THE FEDERAL COURT OF AUSTRALIA

Today I announce the appointments of Mr Roger Derrington QC and Mr Michael Lee SC as judges of the Federal Court of Australia.

Mr Derrington graduated from the University of Queensland as Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) in 1986. He was admitted as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of Queensland the same year and signed the High Court Roll in 1987. He undertook post graduate legal studies at the University of Oxford. He was a Tutor and Sessional Lecturer at the University of Queensland in 1989. In 1990, he was Associate to the Hon Sir Gerard Brennan, Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia.

Mr Derrington commenced practice as a barrister in 1990. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2004. His principal areas of practice have included commercial law, equity and trusts, contractual disputes in the areas of banking, joint venture disputes and insurance, corporations and securities law, trade practices, insolvency and bankruptcy litigation, administrative law, and taxation and revenue law.

Mr Lee graduated from the University of Sydney as Bachelor of Laws in 1988. He was admitted to practice as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1989 and commenced his career as a solicitor at Corrs Chambers Westgarth in 1989, becoming a partner in 1995.

Mr Lee signed the Bar and High Court Rolls and commenced practice as a barrister in 2002. He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2011. His principal areas of practice have included commercial law, equity, class actions, administrative law, employment law and anti-discrimination, building and construction, public interest law, commissions and public inquiries, industrial prosecutions, banking and finance, insurance and criminal law.

Mr Derrington will be assigned to the Brisbane Registry, commencing on 29 March 2017. Mr Lee will be assigned to the Sydney Registry, commencing on 27 March 2017.

I congratulate Mr Derrington and Mr Lee on their appointments and wish them well in their services as judges at the Federal Court of Australia.
