ABBOTT/TURNBULL GOVERNMENT GETS AN ‘F’ FOR ENVIRONMENT

The State of the Environment report tracking the health of the environment over the past 5 years has been delivered, and it is damning.

The Abbott/Turnbull Governments have overseen deterioration in biodiversity, groundwater quality, agricultural lands, waterways, and marine habitats.

And on top of this we see negligible action on climate change.

The report most importantly calls for „national leadership‟, the lack of which is becoming a theme for the Turnbull Government.

“It‟s no surprise that the report calls for „national leadership‟,” said Shadow Environment and Water Minister Tony Burke.

“The Liberal Party‟s approach has been to attack environmental protections from the day they arrived in office.”

The report contains a particularly disturbing key finding; the impact of air pollution on human health is worse than had been previously thought, effecting people at lower concentrations than expected.

“Pollution has risen ever since the Abbott/Turnbull Government took charge, and according to their own projections will continue to rise as far as projections go, to 2030,” said the Shadow Climate Change and Energy Minister Mark Butler.

“As Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull has taken no steps to take serious action on climate change, if fact he‟s going backwards toying with the idea of taxpayer funded coal plants.

“Under this Government the nation will fail to meet our international commitments under the Paris Agreement, failing current and future generations of Australians.”

Ever since Tony Abbott took office, the Government has washed its hands of national environmental leadership and given it over to the states.

Labor has a plan and is 100 per cent committed to national leadership on the environment, because that is what Labor has always done.

When last in government Labor:

 Acted on climate change  Resolved the Tasmanian wars with a historic world heritage listing  Established the world‟s largest network of marine parks  Established the Murray Darling Basin Plan

Since coming to power, the Liberal National Government have attacked all four.

Labor can be relied upon to provide national leadership that the Liberal Party will not.
