THE HON AMANDA RISHWORTH MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR VETERANS’ AFFAIRS SHADOW MINISTER FOR DEFENCE PERSONNEL FEDERAL MEMBER FOR KINGSTON

GOVERNMENT OVERCOMMITTS ON THEIR OWN PLAN TO ADDRESS MEFLOQUINE CONCERNS

The Minister’s dedicated Mefloquine team has been exposed as a team which deals with competing priorities - and not an exclusive team to veterans who believe they are suffering from the effects of Mefloquine, as previously promised by the Turnbull Government.

The Government has brought themselves undone by overcommitting and under-delivering on their own plan to address concerns of Mefloquine.

In September last year, the Minister committed to a number of priorities, one which would “establish a dedicated DVA mefloquine support team to assist our serving and ex-serving ADF community with mefloquine-related claims.”

However, officials from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs revealed in Estimates that this team is a small group who deal with mefloquine related inquiries.

When asked about the Minister’s dedicated team, DVA confirmed that there was no dedicated team and rather this was ‘spread’ across a handful of DVA staff who deal with a range of issues at any one time.

Labor understands this is a complex issue, however, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs has overcommitted the Government’s response and mislead the veterans community.

The Minister needs to come clean on what support he is offering the veterans’ community on this complicated issue.
