Time to move forward on marriage equality: Cathy McGowan

Independent Member for Indi, Cathy McGowan, has joined with Adam Bandt and Andrew Wilkie to give notice of presenting a Marriage Legislation Amendment Bill 2016.

Ms McGowan’s support for marriage equality was a 2013 and 2016 election commitment and she maintains there is no room for discrimination in Australia.

“The legal and institutional framework that governs Australia should treat all people equally,” she said.

“My position on a plebiscite remains unchanged. I will support a plebiscite if that is the only option made available by the government to progress this legislative change.

“My preference has always been for a conscience vote in the House of Representatives by the Parliament.”

If the plebiscite goes ahead Ms McGowan said she will work with constituents and communities in Indi, to ensure it is completed in a respectful way.
