THE HON BRENDAN O’CONNOR MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR EMPLOYMENT AND WORKPLACE RELATIONS MEMBER FOR GORTON

TURNBULL HIRES WORK CHOICES WARRIOR

Malcolm Turnbull is determined to drag Australia back to the dark old days of Work Choices.

The biggest advocate for Work Choices has been hired by Mr Turnbull as his senior economic adviser.

Former ACCI boss and Member for Eden-Monaro, Peter Hendy, gave Work Choices a "9 out of 10" and the Prime Minister has seen fit to appoint him as his primary economic adviser.

He was also the brains behind the failed double taxation thought bubble earlier this year, which proposed the states could levy their own income taxes.

As the head of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr Hendy published a paper that was a precursor for the Liberal’s unfair 2014 Budget - including cutting pensions and family payments, and increasing the retirement age to 70.

This says everything about Malcolm Turnbull's judgment.

Malcolm Turnbull didn't just defend Work Choices, he advocated for it - he believes in it and is doing everything he can to creep back to it.

This government hasn't told Australians how it will deliver on its "jobs and growth slogan" but it’s clear that it has a secret plan for industrial relations changes.

Despite having no mandate to respond to the Productivity Commission into Workplace Relations or the Trade Union Royal Commission, the Government's direction is now clear - Work Choices 2.0.

We know the Prime Minister wants penalty rates to be cut. Despite claiming to respect the independence of the umpire, he has consistently intervened to undermine it, by abolishing the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal and intervening in the CFA dispute.

Mr Turnbull then exposes his hypocrisy by claiming he cannot defend penalty rates of low paid workers because it's up to the independent umpire to make the decision. When it suits Malcolm Turnbull he shows nothing but contempt for the independence of the Fair Work Commission but will hide behind the principle when justifying why he won't lift a finger to look after wages of low paid workers.

We know Malcolm Turnbull wants to undermine collective bargaining and he wants to drive down wages from their already record lows.

And now Turnbull has picked a Work Choices warrior to set his economic direction.

Only Labor can be trusted with the pay, rights and conditions of working Australians.
