OFFICE OF SENATOR RICKY MUIR Australian Motoring Enthusiast Party Senator for Victoria

Representing all Australians diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes

Victorian Senator Ricky Muir introduced a Private Senator’s Bill to the Senate, on Wednesday 24 February 2016. The Social Security Amendment (Diabetes Support) Bill 2016, to amend the Social Security Act 1991, to ensure Australians diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes have access to required medication and peripheral devices despite their socioeconomic status.

Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition which is a non-lifestyle condition which lasts for life and directly affects over 120,000 people in Australia alone.

“Although Type 1 Diabetes is now manageable, it places an enormous burden on families by requiring them to enter a daily and relentless grind of blood testing and insulin injections,” Senator Muir said.

The more time people with Type 1 Diabetes spend outside the normal range of blood glucose levels, the greater their risk of serious health complications into the future. Currently the cost of hospital admitted patient services, as a result of diabetes diagnosed admittance, is equal to expenditure on blood glucose lowering medications.

“Something which is unfortunately overlooked is the significant financial and emotional burden which Type 1 Diabetes imposes on not only the patients, but also their family and the broader community. If we can ensure accessibility to diabetes care from a younger age, this will carry over into better diabetes care practices into adolescence and adulthood.”

On Thursday 17 March 2016 the Australian Senate was to be presented with the opportunity to debate Senator Muir’s Diabetes Support Bill. Senator Muir said, “I am extremely disappointed that such an important issue to all Australians is not going to be addressed in the coming sitting week. The Government and the Greens have put self-interest ahead of Governing Australia in the form of electoral changes. The Government has introduced a motion to put electoral reform ahead of all other business with the support of the Australian Greens. Should this bill not be debated this coming sitting week, and the Government and Greens push ahead with electoral reform and a double dissolution was to follow, this bill may never be debated, which would be a devastating result.”

“I encourage all Australians who are impacted by Type 1 Diabetes to share their story with their relevant Member of Parliament and Senator. How can the decision makers of our great nation best represent you if they are not aware of the daily decisions and sacrifices you are often forced to face? ”
