MEDIA ALERT Steel industry future hangs in balance, despite Bluescope announcement

WHAT: Media conference with Independent Senator for South Australia, Nick Xenophon

WHEN: 12.30pm Sydney time today (Monday) (12pm SA time)

WHERE: Outside Sydney Living Museums, The Mint, 10 Macquarie Street, Sydney

Senator Xenophon will speak about the welcome announcement today by Bluescope Steel, following his speech this morning to the Welding Technology Institute of Australia national conference this morning.

Senator Xenophon this morning warned that the Australian steel sector - including welders and fabricators - would not survive unless there was an aggressive move on the dumping of cheap, high-boron content, steel from overseas, primarily from China.

Senator Xenophon will push via legislation for:  Strict adherence to Australian standards for steel structures, including a move to introduce a mandated cap on boron in steel at 8 parts per million - the threshold above which welding becomes brittle and weak

and structures become potentially unsafe

 A ‘buy Australian first’ policy for government procurement of steel and steel fabrication services, that recognises the wider economic, taxation and jobs benefits of buying in Australia
