Annan confirms Howard's Iraq war illegal

16th Sep 04

The Howard government's involvement in the war on Iraq has been further undermined by the United Nations Secretary-General's comment that the war was illegal, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

"Secretary-General Kofi Annan has spoken plainly today about the unlawfulness of the US-led attack on Iraq, in which Prime Minister Howard involved Australia," Senator Brown said.

"Mr Howard's defence that he had legal advice to justify Australia's involvement is hollow. The legal advice relied on an argument that Security Council Resolution 678, passed in 1990 authorising force to remove Iraq from Kuwait, was still in force and that therefore the US invasion 13 years later was legal.

"The Howard government has shown that it prefers to follow the lead of the US rather than to work legally and cooperatively with the international community to resolve conflict."
