ROGER PRICE MP Federal Member for Chifley

MEDIA RELEASE 16th December 2003

Federal Chifley MP, Roger Price, has warned holiday travellers not to get caught out by exorbitant petrol price rises over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

“Prices invariably rise over the Christmas break, particularly on public holidays, but knowing when to buy your petrol can certainly save families a bit of money”, Mr. Price said.

Research from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) indicates that the cheapest petrol in Sydney is most often found on a Tuesday, while prices tended to peak on Thursdays.

Meanwhile, petrol price cycles show that prices peak and trough every seven days which makes it easier for motorists to predict the next petrol price rise or fall.

“If you’ve just paid through the nose to fill up on a Thursday, you’ll know not to buy the following Thursday. Similarly if you’ve got a good deal at the pump, there’s a good chance the price will be reasonable on that same day next week”.

“There’s no question that motorists can save themselves a few dollars simply by filling up at the right time”.

Mr. Price said with Christmas Day and New Years Day both falling on Thursdays this year, the Tuesday before is probably the best time to fill up the family car.

“The Christmas holiday period is already an expensive time for many families, but knowing which day to buy your petrol on could save you up to five dollars each time you fill up”.

I’d like to wish all Chifley families a very safe and happy Christmas break and urge all drivers to exercise extreme caution at such a busy time on the nation’s roads”.
