We should move to shorter hours

Greens MP and workplace relations spokesperson Adam Bandt has praised a new report on time poverty saying it is further evidence of why workers should be able to work shorter hours.

The Australia Institute Report - Long time, no see: The impact of time poverty on Australian workers - released today says over 390,000 jobs could be created if Australia moved to a shorter working week.

“This is a timely and important report,” Mr Bandt said.

“The next front in industrial relations reform must be legislating to give people greater control over their working lives. In particular, people who want to work less should have a right to do so.”

“Previous decades of reform have seen entitlement give way to insecurity and ‘flexibility’ become over and underemployment. People increasingly know this way of life is unsustainable.”

“It’s time for government to start ensuring a fairer spread of working hours so those who want to work more can, and that those who don’t, don’t have to.”

Mr Bandt will give notice of a Parliamentary motion to acknowledge the National Go Home on Time Day on November 24 which was the impetus for the Australia Institute’s report.
