The Nationals Member for Mallee John Forrest told Parliament this afternoon that people in the Murray Darling Basin are becoming even more confused by the water reform process.

“They are confused about what the Murray Darling Basin Authority can legally report, how much water will be cut from the Basin, and whether it’s the Authority or the Minister that’s running the show,” Mr Forrest said.

Mr Forrest’s “question” to Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities Tony Burke was ruled out of order, but he did ask when the Gillard Government would start governing and set out a clear direction for the water reform process.

“I wanted to know when the government would start considering engineering solutions to save real water like the savings from the Loxton irrigation district in South Australia and the Wimmera Mallee Pipeline which received federal funding under a Coalition Government,” Mr Forrest said.

“To his credit, Tony Burke has advised he was well aware of the state of anxiety in Sunraysia and that it was one of the key places in the Basin he will soon visit,” Mr Forrest said.
