PAID PARENTAL LEAVE

Federal Member for Cunningham, Sharon Bird, today welcomed passage through Federal Parliament of a Paid Parental Leave scheme.

“This is historic legislation which will benefit families and children and the national economy.

“Australia was one of only two other countries in the OECD which did not have a paid parental leave scheme.

“From 1 January next year, eligible parents will receive 18 weeks parental leave paid at the federal minimum wage, currently $570.00 per week.

“The structure of the paid parental leave will be determined by each individual family.

“There is real flexibility in how families can take advantage of the Government’s paid parental leave scheme”, she said.

Ms Bird said that the Paid Parental Leave scheme had been introduced following a Productivity Commission report.

Ms Bird said that the Paid Parental Leave scheme’s importance was also highlighted in a report by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Employment and Workplace Relations, of which she is a member, on pay equity and increasing female participation in the workplace.

“Parents now have more options to help balance family and work, employers will be able to retain key, skilled staff, and Australia’s productivity will be boosted.

“Families in my electorate can lodge claims for Parental Paid Leave with the Family Assistance Office from 1 October 2010”, she said.
