Education and training to be gutted by Liberal Opposition

Every parent and business in the Illawarra should be very worried by Tony Abbott’s plans to gut education and training, Federal Member for Cunningham, Sharon Bird, said this afternoon.

“The Commonwealth Government is trying to implement an agenda in education and training which adds to Australian productivity by ensuring school children are computer literate and have access to a career in the trades.

“We are also trying to prepare Australia to avoid the return of a skills shortage crisis by investing in vocational education and training, traineeships and apprenticeships.

“All of this will be at risk because Tony Abbott intends to gut education and training.

“You can obviously trust his plan because it is written down”, Ms Bird said.

The Liberal Opposition intends to:

ï¿» Cancel the computers in schools program which is providing a computer for every school child in years 9-12 by the end of 2011, giving our kids the IT skills they need in the workplaces of the future.

ï¿» Cancel the Trades Training Centres program which is delivering a new trades training centre in every secondary school that wants one and allows schools to combine their resources to provide trades super-centres. These centres will give our kids skills they need to get jobs tomorrow.

ï¿» Cancel the Productivity Places Program which is providing 711 000 training places across Australia to help those out of work find jobs and those with jobs improve their skills.

ï¿» Cancel the Smarter Schools Teacher Quality program which helps our teachers with new training and resources to help them improve their teaching of our kids, including greater principal autonomy, providing new pathways into teaching and funding higher salaries for our very best teachers.

Small business in the Illawarra will be hit too by the Liberal Opposition’s plan to oppose the Rudd Government’s delivery of:

ï¿» Early start to company tax rate cut for small business ï¿» Small business instant asset depreciation write-off , and ï¿» High-speed National Broadband Network.
