$546,000 grant to support palliative care

A Commonwealth Government grant to improve palliative care, support and services has been awarded to the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute, Federal Member for Cunningham, Sharon Bird, announced this afternoon.

“The Government will provide the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute with $546,113 under the Local Palliative Care Grants Program.

“The Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute, based at the University of Wollongong, is one of 21 grants provided by the Government across Australia”, Ms Bird said.

The Institute will use the grant to implement the REACH out in dementia recognise end-of-life and care holistically project, including development of a model for initiating and facilitating the ‘family conference’ plus the implementation of an ‘Ongoing Life Management Plan’.

“Each year more than 20,000 Australians receive specialist palliative care, and more than 500,000 patients, carers, family members and friends are affected”, she said.
