SCAM ALERT - Email promising tax refunds

Federal Member for Cunningham, Sharon Bird, has today warned Wollongong residents and businesses to be aware of a new scam email using the promise of a tax refund to steal private information.

“The scam uses an email which claims it is from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and shows a fake ATO email address as the sender.

“The email asks the recipient to enter their email, name, and date of birth to search for the promised refund, which then directs them to another site and asks for their personal and credit card details.

“Anyone receiving this email should simply delete it and not provide any information being sought.

“The ATO never sends emails asking people to provide personal information and credit card details.

“Identity fraud is one of the fastest growing crimes in Australia.

“Anyone who has been a victim of this scam should immediately alert their bank or financial institution, Ms Bird said.
