Greens Stand Up For LGBTI Australians

The Australian Greens are the only party that is committed to fight for true equality for LGBTI Australians, according to Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young.

Senator Hanson-Young, Greens spokesperson on Sexuality and Gender Identity, says the Greens have a three-point plan to provide support and protect the rights of LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex) people in Australia.

"The Gillard Government claims it supports social inclusion, but it seems to have a blind spot where the LGBTI community is concerned,'' Senator Hanson-Young said.

"The Greens will protect people's rights, not just dump the issue into the too hard basket, like the old parties.''

The Greens will:

• Re-introduce the Marriage Equality Amendment Bill to remove the ban on same-sex marriage in Australia

• Ensure that sexual orientation and gender identity are included in any national Anti-Discrimination legislation

• Ensure government funding for a national peak body to represent and advocate for LGBTI Australians

"The Greens are not afraid of standing up for LGBTI Australians, whether it's the right to marry the person they love, or to be protected against discrimination in the same way that every other Australian takes for granted,'' Senator Hanson-Young said.

"We were the only party to support my Marriage Equality Amendment Bill which was debated in parliament earlier this year, and we will continue to put pressure on Labor and the Coalition to allow their MPs and Senators to speak freely and vote honestly to achieve reform that the majority of  Australians want.

"It is wrong that sexuality and gender identity are not included in our anti-discrimination laws - this kind of discrimination belongs in the past.

"We will ensure these grounds are added when the Government moves to consolidate Australia's numerous laws covering this area.

"The Federal Government funds peak bodies for people with disabilities, regional and rural Australians, women, young people, seniors, culturally and linguistically diverse people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

"These are all interest groups that deserve support, but why is the Government ignoring LGBTI Australians? The Greens will move to secure Government funding ($300,000 a year for four years) for a properly-resourced national peak body that represents LGBTI people.

"Our three-point plan reinforces the Greens' commitment to support LGBTI Australians - we will continue to fight to protect their rights and provide the real support they need.''
