Think of the cruise ships

THE planned use of methyl bromide at the Burnie port has the potential to damage the city’s reputation as Tasmania’s premier destination for cruise ships, Liberal Senator Stephen Parry said today.

“Burnie has established a reputation as a port of choice for the cruise line s, with tens of ships and thousands of passengers now visiting the city every year,” Senator Parry said.

“While the question of whether methyl bromide, which is banned in many countries, poses a risk to public health may be arguable, what is beyond doubt is that the controversy that has erupted poses a direct threat to Burnie’s new image.

“Burnie cannot afford to be seen in the national media as a city that allows environmental practices that do not meet community expectations.

“This alone should be sufficient reason for the responsible Minister, Bryan Green, to step in and ban the use of this chemical at the Burnie port.”
