Mr Sidebottom’s claims not good enough for Tasmanian mining families

A TASMANIAN Labor MP has been asked to explain how he can claim not only that jobs will not be lost thanks to the Rudd Government’s mining tax, but why it may actually be good for some miners.

Senator Stephen Parry, speaking on behalf of the Tasmanian Liberal Senate Team, said given the risk to local jobs, it is not enough for Braddon MP Sid Sidebottom to make a claim without giving evidence.

“In North-West T asmania, we have had Grange Resources and Bendigo Mining, which operate the Savage River and Henty mines respectively, speak out against this tax in the strongest, yet most reasonable, terms,” Senator Parry said.

“We have also had West Coast Mayor Darryl Gerrity, who has had his disagreements with the industry in the past, express concerns on behalf of his mining-dependant communities.

“They and every worker in the mining and mining-related industries in Tasmania, along with their families, would like to know the basis for Mr Sidebottom’s claims.

“And, like Cr Gerrity, I would call on Mr Sidebottom to guarantee in writing his claim that not one job will be lost in North-West Tasmania thanks to this tax.”
