Support for Burnie task force call

ACTING Burnie Mayor Anita Dow’s call for a special task force to assist the city look to the future as the iconic `pulp ’ winds down should be roundly supported, Liberal Senator Stephen Parry believes.

Yesterday, Senator Parry called for a bipartisan approach to help the community identify and seize new opportunities.

“A task force drawing from local business and community groups, all levels of government and from all sides of politics is needed if Burnie is to rise to the challenge that the mill closure presents,” he said today.

“It’s not enough for those in government to point to programs or projects that were already in train before yesterday’s sad announcement, and it certainly would not be good enough to indulge in political gamesmanship.

“As many have said, the silver lining on the loss of the paper mill is the opportunity it gives Burnie to take a new direction, to look to a new future ; particularly with regard to the site itself.

“We all need to work together to develop a community vision and make it happen.”
