Football’s celebration of multicultural Australia

Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and Citizenship Senator Kate Lundy congratulates the winners of the Football Federation Australia’s Australian Football Awards and everyone who was nominated.

The awards, held in conjunction with Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) and Football Media Association of Australia were announced at a gala event last night in Sydney.

“The awards showcased the true multicultural character of not only Australian sport, but our society in general,” Senator Lundy said.

“I was thrilled to see this year’s amateur coaching award given to Asefa Woldemariam, who has made Australia his home after growing up in a politically unstable part of Africa.”

Mr Woldemariam has helped develop a program in Maylands in Western Australia which brings together young people from many different backgrounds and unites them in their love of football.

“Mr Woldemariam’s commitment to strengthening his community is a terrific example of how being a multicultural nation can benefit us all.”

The community of culturally diverse Brisbane suburb Holland Park was also acknowledged with the Holland Park Hawks Under 14’s team winning the 2010 Youth Team of the Year award for their on and off-field achievements.

I also congratulate the PFA for their inaugural women’s football awards, following the Matilda’s sensational success in Asia and the second season of the national women’s football league, the W-League.

“I congratulate all of last night’s winners and Football Federation Australia for recognising and celebrating through sport, one of the great strengths of being a multicultural nation” Senator Lundy said.
