New Warning on Global Environmental Crisis Must Be Taken Very Seriously - Greens

31st March 2005

The latest warning on global degradation, by 1360 scientists, must be taken extremely seriously by all Australians, from the Prime Minister down, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

“Our living planet is badly injured. It needs nursing not more plunder. I fear the reaction of those in power will be to treat this crisis like a fire sale and simply raise consumption,” Senator Brown said.

Amongst urgent action the Greens say the Howard Government should take are:

• a carbon tax with proceeds to promote good environmental

technology and business;

• a switch from funding freeways to promote fast clean and on-time public transport;

• an end to clear fell logging and burning of Australia’s forests and

woodlands.

“This morning, far south Tasmania is shrouded in smoke. The fire bombing of Tasmania’s forests, with Hiroshima-like clouds rising over the wilderness and smoke clogging the land, puts the Australian government’s anti-environmental chauvinism into perspective.

“The fire bombing is killing wildlife and ecosystems, worsening global warming and cheating future generations of their forest heritage. Yet it has John Howard’s personal blessing,” Senator Brown said. .
