LINDSAY TANNER MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR COMMUNICATIONS

MORE TELSTRA JOB CUTS IN REGIONAL AREAS

Telstra is planning a further wave of job cuts in regional areas. Telstra have told unions around 160 field staff positions are being cut throughout regional Australia.

This is despite the fact that the Australian Communications Authority recently identified 54 poorly performing Telstra exchanges in mostly regional areas that require improvement.

The Northern Territory Top End which was reported this year as having the largest number of phone services with faults in Australia and the ACA identified as having nine poorly performing exchanges, loses around eight staff.

Telstra field staff help maintain the Telstra network by conducting line and exchange maintenance and repairs. But Telstra is removing the very staff who can get Telstra’s regional network back up to scratch.

Telstra must get back on the job. Plans to shed field staff in regional areas defy logic. Telstra should reconsider its plans to shed field staff and focus on providing all Australians with decent and affordable telecommunications services.
