JOINT STATEMENT BY THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION THE HON SIMON CREAN MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR PRIMARY INDUSTRIES SENATOR KERRY O’BRIEN

PM FAILS LEADERSHIP TEST ON LIVE SHEEP

Prime Minister John Howard has failed the test of leadership on the animal welfare crisis engulfing 53,000 Australian sheep stranded in the Middle East aboard the MV Cormo Express.

Yesterday Cabinet discussed the crisis, but failed to adopt a plan to get the sheep off the boat.

Mr Howard merely instructed his Agriculture Minister, Warren Truss, and Trade Minister, Mark Vaile, to renew negotiations on port access.

Despite growing domestic and international concern about the health of these sheep, the Prime Minister has abrogated his responsibilities by refusing to intervene.

Mr Howard himself must initiate high-level diplomatic contact to secure a port at which the sheep can be off-loaded.

The MV Cormo Express has been at sea for fifty-one days. It is now over a month since Saudi authorities first rejected the sheep.

The Prime Minister must now heed Labor’s demand and personally intervene in this crisis.
