Janelle Saffin ‘silent and complicit’ as her Labor Government takes the axe to Southern Cross University

After frequently using Southern Cross University as an election campaigning prop, Page Labor MP Janelle Saffin is nowhere to be seen as her Government slashes funding for Southern Cross University, Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Fiona Nash has charged.

"Locals have seen Ms Saffin using photo op, after press release, after photo op selling herself as SCU’s great benefactor, but now she has gone all quiet as she prepares to fly back to Canberra and vote for the biggest university cuts this century," Senator Nash said.

University Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Lee has described the cuts as ‘short sighted’ and said Labor’s abolition of Student Start-up Scholarships would inflict particular pain on regional students.

Senator Nash said that as a university town already doing it tough economically, Lismore would be hit very hard indeed.

"A study, commissioned by the Regional Universities Network in January, found that SCU contributes $506.8 million to the local economies and provides 2365 full-time equivalent jobs to those communities," Senator Nash said.

"Factor in a two per cent cut and you have serious pain for small businesses and families in Lismore and beyond," Senator Nash said.

"If Ms Saffin was really the hard-working local representative portrayed in her political ads, she would stand up and say no to the Government taking the axe to her local university."

"The fact that she is too busy running scare campaigns on everything from CSG to river dams to that shows she is just another Labor politician toeing the party line," Senator Nash concluded.
