Justine Elliot off to Canberra to vote for Gillard’s Southern Cross University cuts

Richmond Labor MP Justine Elliot and the Gillard Government she belongs to are on the point of damaging the Tweed economy with savage funding cuts to Southern Cross University’s local campuses, according to Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Education.

"Ms Elliot’s former boss in the Trade portfolio, Craig Emerson is slashing a staggering $2.3 billion from universities in a move which SCU Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Lee has described as short sighted" Senator Nash said.

"Southern Cross University has been fantastic for the Tweed, first with the wonderful campus in Tweed Heads and now the big expansion by the airport. It is a growth that the Tweed is very proud of."

A study, commissioned by the Regional Universities Network in January, found that SCU contributes $506.8 million to the Lismore, Coffs Harbour, Gold Coast and Tweed Heads economies and provides 2365 full-time equivalent jobs.

"Yet Justine Elliot is about to get on a plane to Canberra and vote with her Labor and Independent mates for cuts which will harm Tweed families and small businesses."

"Local people must be tired of this Labor politician who pretends to fight for local issues in the Tweed media but then always follows the orders of her Labor Party bosses in Canberra," Senator Nash concluded.
