Elliot and Saffin in Canberra to vote for funding axe on Southern Cross University

North Coast federal Labor MPs Janelle Saffin and Justine Elliot have been caught out cheering a Budget which includes massive cuts to Southern Cross University, Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Education, Senator Fiona Nash has declared.

“The feedback I am getting from the local Nationals candidates Kevin Hogan and Matthew Fraser is that local residents are fed up with their local Labor MPs saying one thing in the electorate and doing the opposite in Canberra,” Senator Nash said.

A study, commissioned by the Regional Universities Network in January, found that SCU contributes $506.8 million to the Lismore, Coffs Harbour, Gold Coast and Tweed Heads economies and provides 2365 full-time equivalent jobs.

"We see Labor in Canberra gloating about how strong the Australian economy is but what small businesspeople are telling Kevin and Matthew is that they are doing it tough.

“Cut to Southern Cross University, cuts to social security benefits, cuts to Medicare and cancelled tax cuts - all these cuts are hurting the North Coast economy and threatening North Coast jobs.

"Unfortunately the only jobs Ms Saffin and Ms Elliot seem to be focused on are their own."

“So why would Saffin and Elliot’s Labor Government want to sabotage this great contributor to the region?," Senator Nash said.
