New one-stop-shop for government services in Hamilton

Senator the Hon Jan McLucas Minister for Human Services

Senator the Hon Kim Carr Labor Senator for Victoria

10 April 2013

For the first time in Hamilton several essential government services will be available in one handy location.

The brand new, purpose-built site at 258 Gray Street will open on Monday 15 April and house Centrelink, Medicare and CRS Australia services and the Victorian Government Department of Human Services office under the one roof.

All staff and services from the Centrelink and CRS Australia site at 86 French Street and the Medicare office at 184 Gray Street will move into the new one-stop-shop.

Minister for Human Services Senator Jan McLucas and Senator for Victoria Kim Carr said the new building would provide better access to services for people in Hamilton.

"This makes it easier for locals who can now access a variety of services in the one place," Senator McLucas said.

"With Centrelink, Medicare and CRS Australia under the one roof, this service centre is the central hub for government services for people in the Western District," Senator McLucas said.

"For example, seniors wanting to enquire about their pension will now be able to do their Medicare business at the same time."

Senator Kim Carr said the community would benefit from the modern facilities at the bigger site.

"The new Hamilton one-stop-shop will be a great asset for the local community," Senator Kim Carr said.

"It's a brand new building and the local team will work with the community to help ensure people get the help they need."

The building features an open-plan layout and double the amount of self-service terminals, to give more people the flexibility to use online and phone services.

The service centre is also conveniently located within walking distance of the main shopping precinct and has ample parking.

New Medicare claiming options

Senator McLucas said people can also take advantage of the new Medicare claiming options.

"Hamilton residents can choose to access Medicare services without having to visit an office," Senator McLucas said.

"You can now claim your Medicare benefit electronically at the doctor's. Two-thirds of doctors in Hamilton now offer on-the-spot claiming, so you don't have to make a separate trip to Medicare.

"In December 2012, there were more than 3800 claims for Medicare rebates made at the doctors in the Hamilton area, and I'd encourage you to ask your local GP about this service.

"Claims can also be made through Medicare online services, at a time and place of your convenience, 24 hours a day, seven days a week."

The new Hamilton Service Centre at 258 Gray Street is open 8.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
