Hon Arch Bevis MPShadow Minister for Defence9 March 1998Public revelations force Bishop's handThe Opposition has attacked the inquiry announced this afternoon by DefencePersonnel Minister Bishop into allegations of illegal detention and assault againstmale and female members of the Defence force as an insult to the men and womenwho were subjected to this appalling treatmentShadow Defence Minister Arch Bevis said that the internal Defence investigation istoo little too late."This inquiry must be an open and full Parliamentary inquiry, not an internalDefence investigation."Only then will justice not only be done but importantly be seen to be done. This .needs to be done to guarantee public confidence in the integrity of the military'sjudicial and disciplinary system."Not only is an internal Defence investigation totally unsatisfactory, it comes amonth after the Minister was first informed," Mr Bevis said."Her apparent outrage today is at odds with her failure to act last month when shewas first informed."It can't be coincidence that the investigation is announced on the same day that thematter becomes public," Mr Bevis said. For further information: John Crawford 0419 685 789 02 6277 4505.COMMONWEALTH P ARLIAMENTARY LIBRARY STOCKADE#2.doc
