THE OPENING OF THE PARALLEL RUNWAY AT SYDNEY AIRPORT
The new parallel runway at Sydney Airport is not yet ready for business as claimed by The Australian today.
Federal Transport Minister, Laurie Brereton, said the Civil Aviation Authority's (CAA) chief executive officer, Mr Doug Roser, wrote to him in August informing him that the runway would be ready towards the end of October.
Mr Brereton said he was also awaiting the final recommendations from the steering committee, expected in the next two weeks, before taking a submission to Cabinet on the noise management plan.
"I am advised that the CAA will be providing a full briefing of procedures for use of the runw ay, involving air traffic controllers , airlines and pilots over the next two weeks," Mr Brereton said.
"I also understand the CAA must provide formal advice that visual and navigational aids for the runway are fully operational before it can be used.
"The opening and use of the runway will happen when the Government and its agencies are satisfied that the required operational , environmental and safety arrangements are in place."
In February, Mr Brereton announced that the parallel runway would open ahead of its original scheduled opening date of June, 1995 and that the project would be completed significantly under budget.
"I expect to be in a position to announce the runway opening shortly, " Mr Brereton said.
