Inquiry into the long-line tuna fishing Agreement with Japan

Hobart Public Hearing

9.00 am - 4:00 pm, Thursday 5 September 1996 Bowen room, Country Comfort Hadley’s Hotel Hobart

The Federal Parliament's newly established Joint Standing Committee on Treaties is to travel to Tasmania to hold a public hearing in connection with its inquiry into the Annual Subsidiary Agreement with Japan on long-line tuna fishing, the Committee Chairman, Mr Bill Taylor MP, (Lib QLD) announced today.

"The Committee has received a number of submissions from a range of Tasmanian industry and community groups who see this Agreement as having great economic importance to Tasmania", Mr Taylor said. He added that he was encouraged by the response and that there were a number of important issues which would be addressed at the hearing.

"A number of the submissions from the Tasmanian fishing industry, including recreational and game fishers requested a review of the 12 nautical mile exclusion zone from the coast around Tasmania as specified in the current Agreement", Mr Taylor said. "The Committee would be particularly interested in getting further input from interested parties on the advantages or

disadvantages of an extension of the exclusion zone to 50 nautical miles".

Mr Taylor also noted comments relating to the significant social and economic benefit to Hobart from the presence of the Japanese long-line fleet. "The Committee is keen to explore these aspects", Mr Taylor said, "and the impact that possible changes to the existing Agreement could have on Tasmania".

Those appearing at the public hearing include the Marine Board of Hobart, the CSIRO Division of Fisheries, the Australian Maritime Officers Union and members of the local tuna fishing and business communities. Anyone interested is welcome to attend.

A program is attached.
