The Federal Member for Groom Bill .'Taylor has said that media speculation in recent weeks about funding for labour market programs 1 as, in some instances, lacked both substance and accuracy. .

Mr Taylor said that in Toowoomba there was understandable concern about DEBT staffing level reductions and the future role ofthe Area Consultative Committee (ACC) established under the previous Federal Labor administration.

"Funding for labour market programs has i ot been frozen and is continuing.

"However, Federal Minister Senator Amanda Vanstone and her Department are looking at ways to improve effectiveness and delivery, particularly a reversal of Labor's previous practice o f recycling some people through training programs with no real jobs at the rad.

"Nationally, a significant proportion o f 1 financial year has yet to be filled. Action' places and to ensure that good quality tra need them.

"Media suggestions that I have been avoiding contact with the ACC are untrue.

"While I have been out o f town for mostjof the last three weeks, all dimensions of job creation programs are under review in the 96/97 Budget round. Any clarification o f future job strategies is a matter for the Minister.

"I remain supportive o f the local ACC c >ncept which is likely to be strengthened under Coalition arrangements.

"Nevertheless, I am disappointed that tl e local emphasis recently has been on the structure of job creation bodies rather than on the u al problem - the plight o f those who matter, the unemployed."
