HYUNDAI EXCEL VEHICLES

The Federal Government expects an early resolution by Hyundai of concerns about some Hyundai Excel vehicles, the Minister for Transport and Regional Services, John Anderson, said today.

“We are looking to the manufacturer to satisfy questions about how Hyundai will proceed to adequately address implications arising from a recognised defect in Excel cars built between August 1994 and March 1996” he said.

“I am particularly concerned about the possibility of the defect emerging in future years. We can expect at some stage that these cars will be purchased by other owners who might be young and inexperienced drivers.

“Clearly the remedial action Hyundai has now begun through inspections and modifications must ensure that the problem does not appear as the car gets older.

“This is a very popular car and it is not surprising that motoring associations and press coverage have highlighted this issue in the last few days.

“I am pleased Hyundai is advising car owners to contact their toll free number 1-800 701 102 or their nearest dealer, and that the company intends to contact all owners of cars that might be affected.

“Given that there are around 46,000 Excel vehicles on Australian roads potentially involved, this is obviously of interest to a significant number of owners and of more general interest to other road users.

“The Federal Office of Road Safety will continue to work closely with Hyundai and the Government expects an early resolution,” Mr Anderson said.
