Federal Primary Industries Minister & Deputy National Party leader, John Anderson, will undertake a two-day visit to the New South Wales north coast this week to examine important forestry and meat industry issues.

Mr Anderson will visit the Coffs Harbour, Casino, Lismore and Grafton districts on Thursday & Friday (Jan 22,23) accompanied by the National Party members for Page, Richmond and Cowper - Ian Causley, Larry Anthony and Garry Nehl.

On Thursday, Mr Anderson and Mr Nehl will inspect forests in the Coffs Harbour district and also hold discussions with industry and community groups.

“I want to hear first hand from timber workers and community groups the key issues of concern to them about current and future forestry operations, “ the Minister said.

“ The Federal Government has proved it is committed to sustainable forest management and long term protection of conservation values through the successful Regional Forest Agreement process.”

Mr. Anderson will then travel to Casino where he, Mr Causley and Mr Anthony will meet a gathering of local beef producers, where the Minister is the keynote speaker at the function.

“ I will be dispelling a great deal of misinformation floating about the north-east beef sector concerning the Government’s restructure of the red meat industries.

“ Contrary to reports, processors will continue to contribute to marketing and promotion at appropriate levels with producers. If they fail to do so I have the power to re-impose a levy on processors.

“ Substantial progress is being made with the new producer-oriented company Meat & Livestock Australia, which replaces the Australian Meat & Livestock Corporation, the Meat Research Corporation and the Meat Industry Council later this year.

“ The Government has given beef producers more control than ever before of their own industry - it is now up to the industry to show leadership and grasp this unique and beneficial opportunity, “ he said.

On Friday, Mr Anderson will travel to Lismore and Grafton for further north-east forest industry discussions.
