$1.45 million boost for carers Australia’s carers will benefit from $1.45 million announced today by Aged Care Minister Bronwyn Bishop.

Mrs Bishop said the funding was being provided for expansion o f the carer respite program in New South Wales, South Australia and the Northern Territory and support for Carer Resource Centres.

NSW will receive $221,500 over two years for the establishment o f a carer respite centre at Broken Hill in Far Western NSW.

South Australia will receive $617,078 over two years for four carer respite centres in Adelaide, Bedford Park and Murray Bridge.

The NT will receive $58,500 over two years for the Central Australian Carer Respite Centre.

The expansion o f the respite carer program was foreshadowed in the $280 million Staying at Home package announced by the Prime Minister in April 1998.

Carer Resource Centres around Australia will be supported with $550,000 to continue their important role o f providing information to carers.

“The invaluable role o f carers often goes unnoticed in the community and people may forget that carers have their own support needs,” Mrs Bishop said.

“This expansion to the carer program further highlights the Federal Government’s commitment to carers o f frail older people, people with disabilities and those with a chronic illness.

“Advice about respite, either planned or emergency, is readily available from Carer Respite Centres, along with a range of other helpful information.

“Carers can visit or telephone the centres and have many o f their support needs met from the one outlet,” Mrs Bishop said.
