‘•Australian automotive exports achieved another record in 1997 when they exceeded $2.6 billion”, Malcolm Stewart, Director of the Federation of Automotive Products Manufacturers said today. .

“While the crisis in Asia remains a considerable concern, strong growth in sales to North America, the Middle East and Korea helped push up automotive industry exports by over $500 million during the year”, Mr Stewart said,

South Korea S373 million

New Zealand S364 million

Middle East $305 million

Total World $2 647 million

Mr Stewart again stressed the need for sanity to prevail on the Australian waterfront and warned that any disruption to overseas supply of automotive products at this critical growth stage could be very damaging to our trading reputation.
