The 1998 TaxPack will be shorter and tailored to the needs of different taxpayers, Tax Commissioner Michael Carmody announced today.

“TaxPack 98 is shorter than last year’s version and contains all the information most people need to prepare a basic tax return,” Mr Carmody said.

“A separate TaxPack supplement will provide extra information for the minority of people with more complex tax affairs.”

Mr Carmody said that this year’s TaxPack, due for release in June, has been refined to reflect feedback received from taxpayers.

“According to results of a national survey conducted for the Tax Office, 91 percent of people who used TaxPack 97, would happily use the new tailored design for this year’s return,” Mr Carmody said.

“Survey respondents also indicated that producing a TaxPack supplement for people with more involved tax affairs made it easier for most.

“With TaxPack providing advice to millions of Australians each year, it is vital to ensure that we continue to make the document easy to understand.

“The survey asked taxpayers to comment on the value of the information included in the TaxPack and the layout of the publication.

“Results showed that 90 percent of TaxPack users believed that TaxPack 97 was easy to use.

“Community feedback is a key principle of the Taxpayers’ Charter, and all input that we received from the survey was considered in the design of this year’s TaxPack,” Mr Carmody said.
